Description

The B5 version of the VW Passat, based on the VW Group B5 platform, was launched in North America and Europe in 1997 and in Australia in March 1998.

The Passat has introduced a new design language,[citation needed] first seen on the Concept 1, for the latest generation of Volkswagen vehicles such as the Mk4 Golf, Bora and Polo Mk4. The sloping windshield and smooth underpinnings give the B5 Passat a 0.27 coefficient of drag. The B5 Passat has a higher quality interior and luxury options that make it stand out in the market.

The car uses a fully independent four-link front suspension; front-wheel drive models use a semi-independent torsion beam, and 4motion 4WD models use a fully independent suspension. A 4WD version was introduced in 1997 as an option for the 1.8, 2.8 V6, 1.9 TDI and 2.5 V6 TDI engines, using a 4WD system based on the second generation Torsen T-2 to minimize loss of traction. The 1.8-liter gasoline engine in the Passat and Audi A4 has a lower oil capacity than the same engine in transverse application (4.6 US quarts (4.4 liters) transversely and 4.3 US quarts (4.1 liters) longitudinally). There are three transmissions to choose from: a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual (codenamed 01E) and a 5-speed automatic with an automated manual transmission. There’s also a 4-speed automatic gearbox, available only on the 66kW and 81kW 1.9 L TDI and select petrol models.

The B5 generation does not have separate fog lamps. They are built into the headlights themselves. There is a model with two rear fog lamps and two front fog lamps (from 1998), and a model with two rear fog lamps and one front fog lamp. The facelift model is equipped with independent fog lamps.
